Oviedo business accused of placing former employees at risk of identity theft

OVIEDO, Fla. — A local business that's closing shop might have placed its recently laid off employees at risk for identity theft, Channel 9 learned.

Dozens of employees were laid off from Sun Road, an underground utility company, a few weeks ago and their private information was just tossed into a dumpster.

Owner Alfredo Bacci is accused of carelessly tossing his former employee's personal information into the trash while clearing out his business. Bacci said he did not toss the documents in the trash.

"I don't need someone stealing everything from me to have to deal with the government, get my identity cleared and all that," former employee Gague Johnson said.

Johnson said he left the company in December.

Bacci said other employees had access to the building and he believes one of them tossed the documents in the trash.

Bacci said he gathered the documents from the trash and called police. They said tossing documents is a civil issue.

"Check their credit bureaus, make sure there's no identity theft going on and if there is, call the Oviedo Police Department," Officer Carl Rager said.

Police said they are making a report and if there's any indication someone set the business up, that person could face charges.

Neighboring businesses said they saw personal information tossed out in the dumpster since late last week. The business closed two weeks ago.
