Owner of escaped cows, bulls roaming Deltona neighborhood wrangles cattle back to pen

DELTONA, Fla. — Loose cows and bulls were eating Deltona residents' lawns and neighbors said they had no idea where the animals were coming from.

The owner of the cattle was identified Thursday as Enrique Hernandez, who said his fence might not have worked as well as it should have. %

Hernandez said that resulted in the cows on his ranch escaping and getting into the neighborhood.

“They go down the street and they see a house with green grass, and all they know to do is just eat,” said Hernandez.

Hernandez said his cousin did not lock up the gate to the cow pen properly and the bovines moved out to green pastures.

“Somebody leaves the gate open, and with a farm like this where there's a lot people coming in, a lot of family, it's liable to happen,” said Hernandez.

Neighbors Angel Cruz said the cows caught him off guard.

“I was kind of surprised about seeing the cows. I mean I've seen the horses and the roosters and stuff like that. I've heard of goats and sheep, but I mean I've never heard cows,” said Cruz.

Hernandez said he rounded them up and brought them back to the pen.

“If you see anything out of the ordinary with farm animals just give me a holler. My gate's always open,” said Hernandez.

Neighbors said as long as it’s the gate to the cow pen that stays closed, they're fine.
