Police ID pizza deliveryman accused of ramming officer with car

WINTER GARDEN, Fla. — Police identified a pizza deliveryman shot by police officers after he rammed his car into an officer Friday, the Winter Garden Police Department said.

David Moran, 37, of Mount Dora, broke an officer’s leg outside the Italian Garden Pizzeria on West Colonial Drive near South Park Avenue, Winter Garden police Lt. Keith Ralston said.

Emad Elsherbny, the restaurant’s owner, said Moran was late to work and behaved oddly.

“He looked sleepy, couldn't talk. Within a couple of minutes of being here, he tried to reach for something and fell,” Elsherbny said. “For me, honestly, that’s the first time I’ve seen him that way.”

Moran became irate after a customer didn’t tip him following a delivery, so Elsherbny told him to go home for the day.

“And he said 'No, I'm going home for good,’” Elsherbny said. “He ran at me and grabbed my chest, and here I am, I'm on my back. My head slammed to the floor on my back."

Elsherbny said Moran struck him with a baking pan and then left, so he called police.

“Our officers tried to stop him but he fled,” Ralston said.

Officers called Moran and asked him to return to the restaurant to give his side of the story.

Moran returned to the restaurant to pick up his last paycheck and then left as officers approached him, Ralston said.

As Moran was questioned, he rammed his car into an officer, pinning the officer between his car and a dumpster, police said. Officers then shot Moran.

Moran was hospitalized, but his condition isn't known. He was charged with attempted murder of an officer, fleeing and two counts of aggravated battery.

The officer whose leg was broken underwent surgery Saturday morning at Orlando Regional Medical Center. His condition isn’t known and police didn’t identify him.

The two officers who shot Moran were placed on paid administrative leave, which is typical in police shootings. They weren’t identified.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting.
