Police: 2nd man arrested in connection with alleged rape at UCF fraternity house

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A second man was arrested late Wednesday in connection with a rape alleged to have happened last month during a party at a fraternity house at the University of Central Florida, UCF police said Thursday.

Antonio Candido, 22, of Boca Raton, surrendered at the Orange County Jail on charges of sexual battery and false imprisonment.

Candido, who graduated from UCF earlier this year, was a former member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity, police spokeswoman Courtney Gilmartin said.

Alexander Garces, 22, who is a UCF senior and an ATO member, was arrested Monday at the fraternity house in connection with the alleged rape, Gilmartin said.

The victim, whose gender wasn't included in the report, told police that on July 22, he or she and a friend attended a New Year’s in July party at the fraternity house, which is on campus.

The victim told officers Alexander Garces, 22, raped him or her inside a bedroom, a report said. Garces, who was granted bail Wednesday, isn't allowed to return to UCF.

The fraternity was placed on interim suspension Wednesday. All activities are prohibited, the school said.

"The serious charges reflect that we have a zero-tolerance policy for sexual violence," UCF police Chief Richard Beary said in an emailed statement. "We must be clear that sexual assault and all forms of violence do not have a place at UCF."

An ATO spokesman said the fraternity is cooperating with school officials, and representatives will attend a hearing scheduled for Aug. 23.

Candido's fraternity membership has been suspended, the spokesman said.
