Police: Home invasion turns deadly in Edgewood

EDGEWOOD, Fla. — An armed home invasion turned deadly early Tuesday, the Edgewood Police Department said.

Deputies were called shortly after 12:30 a.m. to a home on Martinez Drive near Del Rio Street, police said.

Police said a resident in the home was wounded during the incident, which was confined to one home.

Investigators said the victim, later identified as Avery Wheeler, 22, was taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he died.

A relative told Channel 9 that the man who was shot lived at the home with his mother.

"There were none of the tell-tale signs, none of the late night parties, noise, calling police," neighbor William Brown said. "They all seemed like sensible, sane neighbors. That's why this was such a surprise and shock to us all."

Allex Cuentas, 20, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death.

The Sheriff's Office is assisting Edgewood police in their investigation as it's the first homicide in the town in more than 15 years.

It was the small-town feel of the city that drew Brown and his family to Edgewood, which makes the death all the more shocking.

"At that time, we considered the character of the neighborhood to be sort of small townish," Brown said. "Exactly what we were looking for."

The death remains under investigation.

No other details were given.
