Police: Man arrested after shooting estranged wife's date in Port Orange home

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A 50-year-old Port Orange man was arrested Tuesday after a shooting involving his estranged wife and her date, police said.

Thomas Higinbotham was arrested near Edgewater by the Port Orange Police Department and charged with two counts of first-degree attempted murder, shooting into an occupied Residence, armed burglary, and possession of a firearm while committing a felony.

Higinbotham tracked down his wife, Kathryn Higinbotham, Monday at about 11:49 p.m. at a home in the 5400 block of Frederick Lake Drive, the Port Orange Police Department said.

His wife was there with another man, Adam Wellman, and Higinbotham confronted the two while they were in the pool, officers said.

At some point during the confrontation, Higinbotham pulled out a gun and started shooting, police said.

Dispatcher: "911, where is your emergency?"

Caller: "Next door we heard what sounded like gunshots."

Dispatcher: "We got police and rescue coming. Stay in your house, (and) keep the doors locked."

Wellman tried to run but Higinbotham chased after him, continuing to fire the gun as he ran, investigators said.

Higinbotham: "Oh my God! My husband just came and shot some guy. Oh my God!"

Dispatcher: "Wait, your husband just shot a guy?"

Higinbotham: "Yes. Where are you?  Please tell me where you are!  Oh my God! Where are you?"

Wellman, who was hit once in the arm, told police that he ran through the house and out the front door to a neighbor’s home to get help.

Higinbotham fled the scene on a black Honda motorcycle.

Wellman's injury was not life-threatening, police said.
