Police: Overdose patient fights off medics, injures officer during arrest

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police arrested a man they say was less-than-grateful when he regained consciousness after being treated for an apparent overdose Friday evening.

Officers were called to the 1400 block of Palmwood Drive just after 7 p.m. by fire-rescue personnel who had requested assistance with an unresponsive man.

Police say the man, identified as 46-year-old Scott Morris, immediately became combative with the first-responders who had decided to assist him before officers arrived.

Once revived, police say Morris got into his parked car and fled the area, hitting a fire truck on the way.

Morris didn’t get far as he was later found stopped in front of Johnson Middle School where officers attempted to take him in to custody.

Police say he continued to resist, injuring one officer, before he was eventually placed under arrest.

As he was being taken to the Brevard County Detention Center, officers say they also discovered two bags of cocaine Morris was attempting to hide in the police cruiser.

Morris faces charges that include leaving the scene of an accident with property damage, resisting an officer and possession of cocaine.
