Police: Port Orange boy, 8, shot with stolen gun

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — The gun an 8-year-old Port Orange boy was shot with inside a home while playing with his brother was stolen, investigators said Monday.

On Friday, the boys were at home with their bedridden grandfather on Hudson Lane when the gun suddenly went off.

No adults have been held accountable for the shooting, but police said the investigation is ongoing.

Police traced the gun back to South Daytona, where the owner of SCCY Industries, a gun manufacturer, reported the gun stolen in 2009.

Police are working to find out how the gun made it to the Port Orange home, killing 8-year-old Christopher Scurry.

Scurry’s 12-year-old brother said Christopher shot himself on accident.

The 12-year-old then ran across the street to get help. A neighbor gave the boy CPR, but the child later died at the hospital.

During the 911 call, the operator tried to get answers about the gun.

“Where’s the gun?” the operator asked.

“I have no clue,” replied the neighbor in the call.

The neighbor said he was only involved after the shooting.

Police said the boy’s brother—the only witness to the shooting—wasn’t saying much.

A report released Monday said the weapon was found in another room of the house.
