Polk County teacher accused of knocking student down, dragging him

POLK COUNTY, Fla. — Surveillance video obtained by Channel 9 shows a Polk County middle school teacher dragging a student. It's not the first time the teacher has been in trouble.

A report shows the teacher received a verbal warning last year.

The video shows the teacher grabbing a student by the ankle, knocking him down and then dragging the boy across the concrete.

Third-grader Ashton Antoine says Reginald Edge taught his brother.

"I think he was a good teacher, but I think he messed up that time," Ashton said.

School district officials said this incident, from April, was not the first one involving Edge and students at Lake Marion Creek Middle School.

Channel 9's Tim Barber obtained a letter that shows the teacher received a verbal warning in October after he allegedly grabbed a student by the wrist and pulled the boy down the hallway.

"Even if it's the first time, the second time, the third time, it's no way that they have to treat the kid," parent Laura Henao said.

District officials said they want to fire Edge, but he is fighting that with an attorney.

Edge said he has worked for the district for five years without any other problems. He said he grabbed the child in the most recent incident because he was worried about the boy's safety.

Barber showed the surveillance video to some parents, who didn't like what they saw.

"If I see that with my kids, no way at all. I don't permit that," Henao said.

Barber tried to contact Edge's attorney for comment but has not received a reply.
