Couple in their 80s dies in Polk County house fire

An 86-year-old man and his 80-year-old wife died early Wednesday in a house fire near Mulberry, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies said the couple’s neighbor called 911 shortly before midnight to report that the home on Willis Road near Bailey Road had caught fire.

Investigators said Carl Caldwell and Denise Caldwell had significant injuries when firefighters pulled them from the burning home.

The couple were taken to Bartow Regional Medical Center, where they died.

The state fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire, which investigators said does not appear to be suspicious in nature.
