Prosecutors seek death penalty in Sanford double-homicide mass shooting

SANFORD, Fla. — Prosecutors said Tuesday that they will be seeking the death penalty for a 31-year-old man accused of killing his ex-girlfriend and her 8-year-old son, and wounding four others.

The March 27 incident started with a domestic dispute in Sanford that turned deadly after Allen Cashe allegedly showed up at his 35-year-old ex-girlfriend’s home with a gun, investigators said.

Latina Herring and her son, Branden Christian Jr., were killed in the shooting, police said.

Herring’s 7-year-old son, Brenden, was also injured in the shooting, along with his grandfather and two people who were outside the home when Cashe allegedly fled the scene.

The 7-year-old remains at Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Family member Jasmeen Henderson said she was glad that Cashe would be facing the death penalty in the case.

“We saw a lot,” she said. “We went through a lot, and I feel like justice needs to be served for my nephew, his brother, his granddad and his mom.

“Because none of them deserve to go through any of that.”

The boys’ father, Henderson’s brother, was also supportive of the move.

“He’s very emotional about it,” Henderson said. “But he’s also very excited about it, because that’s what he wanted. He wanted justice for his kids.”
