Protesters blast Congressman Dan Webster during Lake County meet-and-greet

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. — A group of anti-Trump protesters took over the narrative at a meet-and-greet with Congressman Dan Webster in Lake County Thursday.

Webster, a Republican, was meeting with the public at his office in Minneola to discuss the $2.5 million he saved from his office budget.

Protesters, though, shouted him down, saying they wanted to talk about other issues facing the country, including alleged ties between President Donald Trump and Russia.

“I would like this representative to work for us back in D.C, and see what he can do about checking into Trump’s ties to Russia, among other things.” Minneola resident Ann Killian said.

Webster experienced a similar incident two days before, when he was booed by protesters outside his office for not answering their questions.

Tavares resident Vance Jochim didn’t think yelling down the congressman was the best way to go about trying to find answers.

“Some of them were very nice and they are fine when they come and they are polite, but there are others that came in yelling and screaming and just interrupting everything and those are the people I don’t appreciate,” he said.

Channel 9 asked Webster about the protesters’ concerns after the event Thursday and he said there was already a system in place to keep Trump, or any president, in check.

“There is the balance of power,” he said. “There are judges, they are the ones that rule whether or not (presidential actions) are constitutional or not.

“They were meant to be, to keep no one (group) from being more powerful than the other group.”
