Report: Man who died outside Orlando officer's home during party had drugs in system

ORLANDO, Fla. — A man who died outside an Orlando police officer’s house had drugs and alcohol in his system when he collapsed, according to an autopsy report.

In September, Channel 9 reported that Officer John Tritt had been relieved of duty and was under investigation because the man died while Tritt was hosting a party.

Tritt is back at work, but is still under investigation.

Questions have swirled around the death of William Byers since he collapsed outside Tritt’s home.

But Byers’ autopsy report attributes his death to “party hard alcohol and (his) drug-use lifestyle” and his “acute alcohol intoxication and acute/recent cocaine use.”

The 48-year-old’s blood-alcohol level was nearly five times the legal driving limit.

Tritt is back on duty at Orlando International Airport.

Police said he can work because he’s not under criminal investigation.

His internal investigation is a question of whether he violated policy with what neighbors described as frequent, wild parties at his house.

The parties flew under the radar until Byers’ death.

But even though Byers' official cause of death was sudden cardiac dysrhythmia, questions were raised about what went on inside Tritt’s home, since Byers had drugs in his system.

Channel 9 asked Orlando police about that part of the investigation and whether the autopsy report calls officer Tritt’s suitability for law enforcement into question.

The department said it will have no comment until the investigation is complete.
