Report: Ocoee officer who hit innocent driver during chase broke policy

OCOEE, Fla. — The internal investigation into an officer-involved crash is finished, more than seven months after an innocent driver was injured.

The investigation showed the officer broke policy when he blew through the red light.

The Ocoee Police Department said it will now train officers in better driving practices and that it has also reviewed its chase policy with officers.

A 44-page internal investigation report said Officer Christopher Bonner will have to go to remedial training.

On May 12, Bonner and another officer chased two armed robbery suspects who were wanted in Altamonte Springs.

Surveillance video showed Bonner drive through the intersection of Orange Blossom Trail and Holden Avenue and smash into another vehicle.

The other vehicle spun out of control.

Bonner then lost control and crashed into a pole and fire hydrant.

Yahaira Montalvo, who was behind the wheel of the car that was hit, suffered injuries to her arms.

The internal investigation report shows the department suspended Bonner for 80 hours, is making him undergo 40 hours of remedial training and gave him a year of probation.

The report said, "Officer Bonner failed to slow down his vehicle for a red light, and entered the intersection at a high rate of speed."

It also said, "Officer Bonner failed to properly clear the intersection causing his patrol vehicle to crash into another vehicle."

Montalvo settled with the police department in October.
