Sanford man, woman arrested on charges of child neglect with great bodily harm

SANFORD, Fla. — A man and a woman were arrested Tuesday on child neglect charges after investigators said a young girl was shot in the hand in a Sanford home.

Aaron Davis, 26, and Devolia Sims, 23, are both charged with child neglect with great bodily harm, according to police. Davis is also charged with unsafe storage of a firearm.

"They determined that the juvenile was unattended in a garage and appeared to have been accidentally shot by a firearm," Bianca Gillett, of the Sanford Police Department, said.

Investigators said Davis and Sims rushed the child to Central Florida Regional Hospital, but their stories didn't match up when questioned. They said Sims said she was not in the garage in one statement and that she was in the garage in another.

Police said Sims is the mother of the child.

Police said they found drug paraphernalia and a number of storage units of ammunition in the garage of the home.

The child's maternal grandmother said the girl is still in the hospital and she will take care of her once she's released.

Davis and Sims were released on bond Wednesday.

Police have not released the address where the incident occurred.
