Sanford officer under internal investigation after gun stolen from car

SANFORD, Fla. — A Sanford police officer is under internal investigation after his gun was stolen out of his car.

Channel 9 got a look at the department's policy, which said the burglary should have never happened. Eyewitness News learned the gun was stolen while the officer was playing softball in a tournament at Rob Sullivan Park, in DeBary.

Officials would not confirm if Officer Jonathan Hall was on call, but that would be the only reason he should have his gear with him. If he was on call, the policy is for the gun to be with him at all times or securely stored inside his SUV.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office, which is conducting the investigation into the incident, said two guns, including an agency-issued 9 mm pistol, his badge and his $500 tactical vest were stolen through a smashed back window.

"Our policy is your weapon should be secure, period," Bianca Gillet, of the Sanford Police Department, said.

In addition to the theft investigation, Hall is under internal investigation from his department. Deputy reports said a majority of the stolen equipment was in the vest, but the reports didn't say if it was stored securely.

"Our vehicles do have different options to secure firearms," Gillet said.

Hall is ranked as an investigator and, according to department policy, he would have only been able to drive his vehicle for personal use if he was on call.

A second car was also broken into at the scene.

Officials said Hall is still working while under investigation.
