Search continues for gunman after East River High School student shot near campus

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — Investigators in Orange County are still looking for the gunman who they said shot an East River High School student close to the campus last week.

Emanuel Lorenzo, 16, was shot in the back of the head on Wednesday, investigators said. He survived the shooting.

His father, Angel Lorenzo, said it still feels unreal that his son was almost killed so close to school.

“By the grace of God, the bullet came in and came out through the other side and he’s still alive,” he said.

Emanuel Lorenzo told his father that dozens of students walked off the property to watch a fight behind a Walgreens.

He said it appeared that the fight wasn’t going to happen, so students started to walk back to their cars.

“A car came from the back of the Walgreens and started shooting,” said Angel Lorenzo.

He said five to 10 bullets were fired into the crowd of teenagers.

One bullet shattered a student’s back windshield and injured his arm.

Another hit Emanuel Lorenzo.

“When you hear it’s a bullet, your whole life flashes in front of you. It’s tough,” Angel Lorenzo said.

He said fragments from the bullet will stay lodged in his son’s head.

“This is something serious. This is very, very serious, and I want proper attention to be given to this because this could be anybody’s kid,” he said.

Angel Lorenzo said he believes that the school should have done more to notify parents about what happened.

The school district released a statement that said, “An off-campus incident took place Wednesday, Sept. 28, 2016. We are working in conjunction with Law enforcement to provide any necessary information to conclude the investigation.”
