Seminole County looks to get bear-proof trash cans to residents

Seminole County leaders are discussing a new effort to give thousands of Seminole County residents bear-resistant trash cans.

One commissioner said it would cut down on the number of bear sightings and problems in residential areas.

"I am now hyperfocused on what the deal is with the garbage and closing the garage door and not putting stuff out until the day the trash man comes," Seminole County resident Lynn Dictor said.

Dictor said if she isn't careful about how she handles her trash, it will attract bears.

Channel 9 has reported on a dog being killed by a bear on the street Dictor lives on.

On Tuesday Seminole County Commissioner Lee Constantine suggested everyone west of Interstate 4 get bear-proof trash cans.

Dictor would be one of those getting a trash can. She said she likes the idea.

"We moved into (the bears') neighborhood, I get that.  But I now have to be super careful about how I dispose of my trash," she said.

Some people have already purchased the special trash cans. Out of the 500 bear-proof trash cans the county got at a discount, 370 people purchased them.

Not everyone favors the idea. Some said they don't believe the government needs to set in (set in what?), while others wondered where the money for the trash cans would come from.

Constantine said it could come from the solid waste trust fund, grants or it could be paid for by the residents for $1 a month for roughly a decade.

"Nobody is going to change their lifestyle for $1 a month over 10 years," Dictor said.
