Several guns, ammo stolen from Tavares apartment

TAVARES, Fla. — Police are looking for the thieves who stole six guns as well as thousands of rounds of ammunition from a Tavares apartment.

Police said the ammunition and the weapons, including an AR-15, were taken from the Rosewood Apartment complex last month.

"It's very alarming, because several days after that we had a fight and there was an AR-15 pointed at someone," said Jon Hall with the Tavares Police Department.

Police said the fight happened at the Caroline Court Apartments, and since the incident officers are taking precautions when they patrol in that area.

According to police, thieves kicked in the back door of the apartment to get to the weapons and ammunition.

Police believe the thieves stashed the ammunition in some nearby bushes. They said a woman discovered the boxes of ammunition Wednesday and called them. Police believe the ammunition is that stolen from the apartment.

"They were either, A, going to come back for it, or B, they couldn't carry everything and they stashed it there," Hall said.  "There were probably 600 or 700 rounds of ammo in the canisters we got off the street today and every little bit helps."

The burglary victim didn't want to talk to Channel 9 about the theft.

"I hate to see somebody with a whole bunch of guns running around," resident Jack Holsworth.

Police said the stolen guns were not being stored in a safe in the apartment when they were taken.
