Man caught after foot chase not involved in shooting, police say

ORLANDO, Fla. — A man captured by police after a lengthy foot chase Thursday was not involved in the shooting for which officers were pursuing him, the Orlando Police Department said.

Police said Bakari McCant, 24, looked similar to the man in the shooting, was driving the same color, make and model car, and was in the same area at the same time, police said.

The incident started at about 9:50 a.m. when Orlando police officers responded to a shooting report in the 1300 block of Deerock Drive.

The victim told police he’d been shot in the 700 block of Cornelia Court and drove himself to Deerock Drive.

When an officer with the Orlando Police Gang Unit located what he believed to be the car involved in the shooting, McCant sped up and lost control of his vehicle at the eastbound ramp to State Road 408 at North Kirkman Road, investigators said.

McCant ran from his disabled vehicle and was taken into custody for resisting arrest after a lengthy foot chase, officers said.

The shooting victim was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, officers said.

McCant was taken to the hospital “complaining of fatigue from the lengthy foot pursuit,” an Orlando Police Department release said.

Police said they're still interested in McCant, even though they don't believe he was involved in the shooting. He does have a criminal history.

The person responsible for the shooting remains at large, but police said he has been identified.

No other information was immediately available.
