Skimming device found at Brevard County gas station

PORT ST. JOHN, Fla. — A skimming device was found Monday at a Shell gas station in Port St. John.

Officials believe that thieves are increasing efforts to install credit card skimmers because new card readers that read an embedded chip in credit and debit cards will soon become the norm, and gas stations will be the last to get the upgraded chip readers.

"It shut my bank account down for two months. I had zero access to my money for two months, so that becomes a very big problem," victim Mike Rausch said.

Rausch believes that his information was stolen from the same Shell station where inspectors found a device on Monday.

Investigators said skimmers capture credit card numbers at the pump, then sold to someone else to use in another location.

Investigators said they weren't sure how many victims had their information captured from the device.

Gas stations are supposed to upgrade to the chip readers by October 2017. After that date, the stations could be held liable for any fraud charges.
