Suspicious package prompts evacuations in Kissimmee City Center for second time Friday

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — For the second time in a day, Broadway in Kissimmee was closed down and businesses were evacuated near City Center after a suspicious package was found, police said.

The Kissimmee Police Department reported the second incident at about 6 p.m.

A suspicious package was found Friday morning in downtown Kissimmee led police to evacuate businesses.

Jacob Ortiz, 20, left a suitcase in front of a propane tank on Broadway and said it was a bomb, police said.

He was later arrested and charged Friday afternoon with false report of a bomb, police said.

"He could have take out downtown, which is why we evacuated every business on Broadway," said Stacie Miller with the Kissimmee Police Department.

Police asked businesses on Broadway from West Monument Avenue to West Neptune Road and on West Dakin Avenue from Church Street to the railroad tracks to evacuate through back doors.

They had been allowed to return to their businesses, but were told to evacuate again Friday evening.

Ortiz is being held on a $5,000 bail.
