Tavares mayor says he will not step down after insurance fraud arrest

TAVARES, Fla. — The mayor of Tavares was booked into the Lake County Jail on Wednesday afternoon.

Deputies said Mayor Robert Wolfe is facing insurance fraud charges.

“I still don’t think I did anything wrong, but obviously the insurance company did,” he said as he walked out of jail Wednesday night.

A prosecutor told Channel 9 the mayor is accused of filing an insurance claim for more than $9,000 in February.

The prosecutor said the mayor claimed his home was heavily damaged and he needed to rent a home until repairs were made.

He said he has no plans to resign.

The state attorney’s office dismissed the case shortly after his wife, Sharon Wolfe, was arrested for allegedly lying under oath.

Officials said Sharon Wolfe accused her husband of firing his gun, but after she filed the report about the gun going off and he was arrested, investigators said she changed her story numerous times and redacted the allegations.
