Teen injured in hit-and-run while playing 'Pokemon Go' gets help with medical bills

PORT ORANGE, Fla. — A teenager’s family is facing a growing financial burden, as she gets medical treatment following a hit-and-run crash.

Adriana Boss, 16, was seriously injured last weekend in Port Orange while playing the popular "Pokemon Go" game.

Adriana Boss was hit by a car while crossing Nova Road.

The driver took off, but police were able to track her down.

Adriana Boss’ mother said her daughter has long road to recovery ahead.

“She has had several surgeries, did physical therapy today (Friday) and the strength that she has is unbelievable,” said Suzanne Boss. “I know she is in a lot of pain, but she still isn’t going to give up.”

Suzanne Boss said her daughter asked to go outside and play the game because she wanted to find a rare Pokemon character.

“So I said, please be careful, and she said, ‘Mom you know I will,’ and she went over the rules of not playing when she is skating and not looking and all that, so I said, ‘OK.’”

Not long after the teenager left the house, Suzanne Boss saw police lights outside.

“They said a little girl on a skateboard got hit, and at that point, I knew,” Suzanne Boss said.

The driver who hit Adriana Boss fled the scene, but a good Samaritan noticed the damage to the car and alerted police.

Heather Leonard, 33, was arrested.

She has since bonded out of jail.

To help with Adriana Boss’ medical expenses, a GoFund Me account has been set up.

And one of the people who was on scene that night and helped out is a racer at the New Smyrna Raceway.

He is taking up a collection at Saturday night’s race.
