Teenager lying in the middle of Bithlo road hit and killed, troopers say

BITHLO, Fla. — A teenager lying in the middle of a Bithlo road was killed when he was run over late Saturday, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Troopers said they are looking for the driver who ran over Lewis Helmick, 17, who troopers say was lying in the southbound lanes of Story Partin Road near the intersection with Colonial Drive around 11:30 p.m.

First responders took Helmick to Florida Hospital East, where he died, the crash report said.

According to the crash report, troopers are still working to determine “what happened after the collision, to include who was driving” the car.

Troopers believe the car that ran over Helmick is a 1997 Chevy Van, the crash report said.

A test to determine if Helmick was intoxicated is pending, according to the crash report.
