Troopers find SUV involved in fatal hit-and-run of Kissimmee woman

OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A 62-year-old Kissimmee woman was fatally struck Thursday evening in a hit-and-run crash in Osceola County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

Amelia Nucum was trying to cross West Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway near Vineland Road at about 9:30 p.m. when she was hit by what a witness described as a newer-model white Nissan SUV, Sgt. Kim Montes said.

The driver fled and Nucum died at the scene, Montes said.

Investigators said they received a call from the vehicle's owner saying that his white, 2012 Nissan Murano was involved in a crash.

Troopers went to the man's home in Kissimmee and confirmed that it was the same SUV that struck the woman because the damage was consistent with the crash scene.

“We are very confident that this is our vehicle. There was evidence on the car to lead us to believe that this is ouR vehicle,” said FHP’s Steven Montiero.

Parts of the vehicle were left at the scene which match the color, make and model of the SUV.

Troopers are still working to figure out who was behind the wheel of the Nissan when Nucum was struck.

“We’re speaking to a few people who we believe were involved in this incident,” said Montiero.

The victim's boyfriend told Channel 9 that they were walking home from a Target store to their room at the Star Motel at Lakeside when they crossed the street.

He said he heard a loud noise and when he looked back, he saw his girlfriend's body in the motel parking lot and their groceries strewn across the road.

Troopers said the couple wasn't in a crosswalk.

“She was a good woman. Like a sister, she’s always been there, always smiling,” said Nucum’s friend, Alberto Alverado.

Investigators said they're following up on several tips and are reviewing footage recorded by surveillance cameras at nearby businesses.

The crash remains under investigation.
