Troopers: Man, 73, boy, 11, die in fiery crash in DeLand

DeLAND, Fla. — A man and a boy were killed and another man was critically injured Thursday evening in a fiery crash in DeLand, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

A man, whose identity wasn't released, was driving a Chevy Camaro at a high rate of speed shortly after 9:45 p.m. on North Spring Garden Avenue near Cascades Park Boulevard, Sgt. Kim Montes said.

Joel Baker, 73, of DeLand, drove his Chevy pickup truck through the intersection in the pathway of the car and the vehicles collided, officials said.

Investigators said the pickup caught fire as it overturned and became engulfed in flames. Baker and his 11-year-old grandson died at the scene of the crash, troopers said.

Troopers said the car also caught fire. The driver was flown to Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach in critical condition.

Charges are pending, Montes said.

The crash remains under investigation.
