Troopers seek driver in hit-and-run that killed pedestrian crossing Apopka Vineland Road

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol responded to a hit-and-run crash Monday that killed a pedestrian as he crossed Apopka Vineland Road in a crosswalk.

The crash was reported just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Apopka Vineland Road and Lake Street.

Troopers said a white passenger vehicle was heading north on Apopka Vineland Road when the driver hit Mirza Baig, 59, as he crossed the road. The vehicle should have front-end damage, troopers said.

"I was in my room playing games and stuff like that. I head like a loud bang and then a honk. Like a loud honk for a couple minutes," witness Marcus Rista said.

Other witnesses said they also heard the car honking, but the driver didn't slow down or stop to check on the victim.

Troopers released new surveillance video of the suspected car before and after the crash in hopes someone recognizes the vehicle.

Troopers said Baig had the right of way because he was in the crosswalk.

No other information was immediately released.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 407-737-2213 or Crimeline, 800-423-TIPS.
