Police: 2 men shot in downtown Orlando parking lot

ORLANDO, Fla. — Two men were shot early Saturday near the intersection of North Orange Avenue and Washington Street, the Orlando Police Department said.

The shooting was reported at about 2:30 a.m. on West Washington Street near North Orange Avenue, police said.

Investigators said someone called 911 to report that the men were shot in the parking lot across from Planet Pizza.

One man was shot in the midsection and taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center in stable condition. The other man was grazed by a bullet.

Investigators said that they've identified everyone involved the case and that charges are pending. Police haven't released their identities.

The city in November reviewed a study of downtown, and a nighttime entertainment task force recommended that the city increase police patrols in the area.

Two suspects who fled the shooting scene were later arrested on unrelated charges after they were identified by witnesses.

In 2015, gunfire erupted in the same area. No one was hit, but people who work in the area were shocked.

“We had staff members in the office that had a bullet go whizzing over their head,” said Matt Morgan of the Morgan and Morgan law firm. “For our family at Morgan and Morgan, that was a terrifying experience.”

The shooting remains under investigation.

Morgan, whose firm works negligent security claims, said the responsibility for safety goes beyond Orlando police.

“If business owners hire security personnel to survey their garages, patrol their garages and OPD has people on the ground, there would be a diminished risk of crimes and bad things happening to people,” Morgan said.
