VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Emergency Medical Services is getting ready to start a new initiative enabling paramedics to administer blood transfusions to specific trauma patients before they reach the hospital.
EMS crews are currently taking part in simulation-based training designed to prepare them for the program’s rollout in the coming weeks.
During the training exercises, paramedics practice identifying eligible patients, preparing blood products and administering transfusions in emergency scenarios.
Officials stated that the program will provide first responders with an additional tool to address severe blood loss. Starting transfusions earlier could help EMS personnel improve outcomes for critically injured patients before they arrive at definitive medical treatment.
Earlier this year, the Volusia County Council approved agreements with Halifax Health and OneBlood to support the program. Halifax Health will assist with blood handling and logistics, while OneBlood will provide the blood products used in the field.
County officials said the initiative is expected to enhance emergency care for trauma patients throughout Volusia County.
