Volusia County family escapes crumbling home, officials say

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. — Volusia County Fire Rescue and county officials said foundation failure, and not a sinkhole, is to blame for issues at a home near Deltona.

The family reported what they thought was a sinkhole at 5:26 a.m. Wednesday at 100 Wild Horse Run in the unincorporated area of Volusia County.

Four adults and two dogs were in the home and had evacuated by the time crews had arrived, officials said. The adults said they were sleeping when they woke up to a noise and noticed the center of the home cracking and sinking, officials said.

The adults said they escaped the home through a window, officials said.

Crews surveyed the area and determined it was foundation failure. The kitchen area had dropped about four inches and there are large cracks in the pool deck, according to reports.

The area around the home has been taped off and the family isn't allowed inside the home because it is uninhabitable, officials said.

No one was injured.

The American Red Cross is assisting the people in the home to find shelter.

County officials said they cannot rule out a sinkhole 100 percent until they do a more extensive inspection of the property.
