Winter Park, Sanford pay tribute victims of Pulse shooting

WINTER PARK, Fla. — It wasn’t just Orlando coming together Tuesday to remember the victims of the Pulse terror attack a month after the shooting.

People gathered in Winter Park and Sanford to pay tribute.

Dozens of people stood in the heart of Winter Park’s downtown in the rain to commemorate the victims.

“It’s just going to take a long time for people to heal. This helps, having a community get together and support that,” said resident Bob Culver.

Forty-nine globes were lit in rainbow colors near Park Avenue, to honor the 49 victims that didn’t make it out of the club when Omar Mateen opened fire.

“Thank you to those people, those souls who gave up their life to evolve mankind,” said Winter Park resident Christi Cavallo.

Mayor Steve Leary said the community is still coming to grips with the tragedy.

“This is difficult to comprehend. Forty-nine friends and neighbors taken from us while most of us slept,” said Leary.

In Sanford, members of the Sanford Mayor's Youth Council marched for peace

“Our youth--16, 17, and 18 year olds--are taking the weight of the world on their shoulders and saying, ‘Enough is enough,’” said Sanford Mayor Jeff Triplett.
