Woman, 18, dies when car crashes into tree in Winter Springs

WINTER SPRINGS, Fla. — An 18-year-old woman died and another person was injured early Saturday when a car crashed into a tree in a Winter Springs neighborhood, the Winter Springs Police Department said.

The crashed happened shortly after 4:45 a.m. in The Oaks at the Highlands subdivision near State Road 19 and North Edgemon Avenue, Winter Springs police Capt. Chris Deisler said.

"The investigation is ongoing," Deisler said. "Alcohol is suspected as a contributor."

Police haven't identified the juvenile male driver, but they said a passenger, Kenia Seales, died in the crash.

She was brought to Sanford's Central Florida Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Seales' mother told Channel 9 that her daughter, who was known to friends and relatives as Kiki, was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. The woman said she wouldn't wish this on any parent. %

"It's just a sad tragedy for the parents and family members and all connected with that," a neighbor, Ray Bertrand, said. "My heart goes out to them."

Police haven't said if the driver will be charged.

The crash continues to be investigated.
