Woman arrested in death of Pine Hills boy, 3, has child-abuse conviction, records say

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — A 58-year-old woman facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the beating death of 3-year-old Xavier Mokarzel-Satchel has a history of child abuse, court records show.

Calleen Barton was arrested in connection with the Friday death, along with Lakesha Lewis, 28, and the boy's mother, Brandi Mokarzel, 23, investigators said.

Lewis is also facing a first-degree murder charge; Mokarzel is facing a charge of child neglect with great bodily harm.

Xavier died Friday afternoon after being beaten with a curtain piece at the Eagle Landing apartments on Silver Star Road in Orange County's Pine Hills neighborhood, deputies said.

According to court records obtained by Channel 9, Barton was convicted in a child abuse case in 2005 with circumstances very similar to those that deputies say led to Xavier's death.

In the 2005 incident, Barton was living at the Coalition for the Homeless shelter, court records said.

She was accused of beating her bunkmate's 11-year-old son with a plastic golf club, a charging affidavit said.

The boy told investigators that Barton grabbed him by the shirt and hit him all over his body, arms, legs and back after an argument he had with his mother earlier in the day, the affidavit said.

At the time, Barton told investigators "that she knew she was wrong, but that's how she was raised to discipline children who are disrespectful to adults," the affidavit said.

Barton was being held without bond at the Orange County Jail in connection with Xavier's death.
