VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla.,None — Gunshot wounds couldn't stop two Volusia County deputies from arresting a gunman accused of trying to kill his ex-girlfriend, investigators said on Monday.
Deputies John Brady and John Braman talked about the incident.
On November 26, even the deputies said they did not expect 27-year-old Corey Reynolds to come out with guns blazing, just hours after he tried to strangle his ex-girlfriend.
Surrounded by the men and women of their unit and the sheriff himself, Braman and Brady gave their first-hand account of a brush with death.
"He still had the gun in his hand and I'm looking at the barrel of his gun and he's waving it in my face," Braman said. "My brain clicked with what happened, what's in his hand, and this is not going well."
It was 5:30 a.m. on Saturday when deputies arrested Reynolds who beat up his ex-girlfriend and choked her at her home in Debary, investigators said.
Reynolds pulled a gun at point blank range and started firing, deputies said.
Braman took a bullet to his arm and his shoulder, while another grazed his neck.
"I didn't feel any pain immediately. I felt the impact and I knew exactly what it was. I felt the second impact and I knew exactly what it was. I knew exactly where it was on my body," said Braman.
A bullet also grazed Brady's shoulder. He thought about shooting Reynolds, but said he didn't want to hit Braman and didn't have time to pull out his gun.
"You got to understand this all happened very quickly, probably five, eight seconds tops," said Reynolds.
To subdue Reynolds, Braman said he laid on top of him even though Braman was wounded.
"I remember telling myself, 'You're doing good, take a deep breath and calm down.' Once the gun was secured," said Braman.
Both deputies said it was their training that saved them and they plan on continuing their careers with the sheriff's office. Both Braman and Brady have a wife and two children.
Brady is back at work, but Braman is still recovering.
Reynolds is in jail on attempted murder charges, deputies said.
