Man shoots dog that bit off son's finger

BRADENTON, Fla. — A Tampa Bay area man reportedly shot and killed a dog after it bit his son's finger off.

The Manatee County Sheriff's Office reports that the boy stuck his left hand through the slots in a cage to pet the dog Friday evening. The dog bit the boy, severing his pinky and injuring his forearm.

Authorities say the father removed the dog from the cage and fatally shot it. He then removed the severed finger from the dog's stomach and waited for emergency responders.

The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/X2xltu ) reports that the child was airlifted to a St. Petersburg hospital. The boy's condition and whether his finger could be reattached weren't immediately clear.
