"We caught up about kids, grandkids, old times and new times. And socks," Clinton said in a tweet that included a picture of the surprise gift as Bush sat in a wheelchair.

CNN reported that Clinton gifted Bush green socks with patterns of chocolate Labs, sky blue socks with bumblebees and a brown pair of socks that were hidden underneath the stack of colorful foot accessories.

Bush is famous for his choice in socks, choosing to don creative designs and colors, including a pair of Superman socks.

"Forty one has been known for wearing colorful socks for years, but it has been most noticed, really, ever since he has been depending on wheelchairs for mobility — exposing his ankles," Bush spokesman Jim McGrath said in an email to the New York Daily News.

In 2013, Clinton tweeted that he was "envious" of Bush's western-themed cactus socks.

Bush recently recovered from a bout of pneumonia that hospitalized him for two weeks in Texas. He got better just in time to handle the coin toss with his wife, Barbara, to kick off the Super Bowl played at Houston's NRG Stadium in February.
