Report: Kenny Baker, R2-D2 actor, dies at 81

Kenny Baker, the British actor who rose to fame as R2-D2 in the "Star Wars" film franchise, has died, according to The Guardian. He was 81, according to The Associated Press.

In addition to the role as the famous robot, Baker also had roles in "The Goonies," "Time Bandits" and "Flash Gordon."

Johnny Mans, Baker's agent, confirmed his death. Baker's nephew and caretaker, Drew Myerscough, said he found Baker dead Saturday at his home in Preston, northwest England.

The Guardian reports that Baker had been in poor health for quite some time before his death.

Myerscough said the affection of "Star Wars" fans around the world "kept (Baker) going, without any doubt."

"He was amazed that, even after 30-odd years, the fans still basically adored him," Myerscough said.

Fans and celebrities quickly took to social media to offer their condolences.
