Fire roars through Nantucket’s historic Veranda House hotel

NANTUCKET, Mass. — A large fire ripped through a historic landmark on Saturday in Nantucket, severely damaging the centuries-old structure.

The Veranda House, a popular bed-and-breakfast inn dating from the 17th century, was engulfed in flames at about 7 a.m. EDT, WFTX-TV reported.

The blaze caused the structure to partially collapse, the Nantucket Current reported. Much of the downtown area in Nantucket was filled with smoke, according to WFXT.

The inn, which was built in the late 1600s in Massachusetts, has 18 rooms and suites, according to its website.

The fire spread to at least one nearby residence across the street, according to the Current. The blaze left the hotel gutted, and charred debris littered the street after the structure collapsed, WFTX reported.

“Damage to the structures involved is extensive with several of the buildings being total losses,” Nantucket Fire Chief Stephen Murphy said in a statement.

According to a Facebook post, firefighters from the Yarmouth Fire Department and crews from other parts of Cape Cod responded to the fire.

The hotel’s staff and guests were safely evacuated, according to the hotel’s Facebook page.

“The safety and security of our guests, team, and community is our top priority and we will continue to work closely with emergency responders and safety authorities,” the statement said.
