Hurricane Irma: Residents use kayaks to get around Osceola County community

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Residents in a 55-plus community in Kissimmee are having to use kayaks and canoes to get around their streets and homes in Kissimmee.

The Good Samaritan Society on Village Drive has been flooded from Shingle Creek ever since Hurricane Irma hit Central Florida Sunday night into Monday morning.

Many residents, who are elderly or disabled with special care needs, are trying to get back into their homes to pick up medications and clothes, but are being met by a deputy who won’t let them back into the community.

About 300 residents have been evacuated and are staying at a shelter at Heritage Park.

“We're just devastated because we made it through a major storm and then to have to be evacuated,” said Good Samaritan resident Leslie Lane.
