Crash data shows Orange County's most dangerous intersections

ORLANDO, Fla. — Channel 9 has learned of the six most dangerous intersections in Orange County, and half of them are on Colonial Drive within a 5-mile radius.

Reporter Racquel Asa asked county officials if there are any plans to make the intersections safer so residents like Joe Coontz can travel safely by bicycle.

Coontz told Channel 9 he has a handful of close calls a week on Colonial Drive.

"I've had to yell at them to get their attention coming off the intersections," he said.

Asa went through five years of crash data with Metroplan Orlando and noticed the intersection of Colonial Drive and Alafaya Trail has made the list since 2010.

But what's being done to fix the troubled intersections?

"Well, we give this information to all the engineers and planners in the area and they in turn are able to go through the crash factors to determine what fixes can be made," said Cynthia Lambert of Metroplan Orlando.

Colonial Drive by Alafaya Trail is only four lanes of traffic, but when Asa looked at the state's future project plans, Colonial will be widened all the way east to Avalon Park Boulevard.

The $36 million project is supposed to start in the fall.

Intersections on list were based on the number of crashes in 2012. Colonial at Alafaya Trail had 104 last year.
