MELBOURNE, Fla. — Melbourne police said they have a man in custody who had barricaded himself in a home near Crescent and Brevard drives.
Police said 24-year-old Wade Dante Jackson was wanted on violation of probation for driving while his license was revoked, and fleeing and eluding.
He was being sought by the Game Over Task Force.
The unit had pulled over Jackson's car, police said. The driver got out and Jackson, who was in the passenger's seat, jumped into the driver's seat and took off.
Jackson drove a short distance, fled the car and ran into a random house at the intersection of Crescent and Brevard drives, police said.
Melbourne police said the residents in the house, two adults and a young child, all hustled out of the home quickly and without injury.
Police said Jackson was considered armed and dangerous based on his past history of felonies.
The standoff lasted several hours. Police said it was difficult to get Jackson out of the home and said he refused to speak to officers.
Eventually, SWAT team members had to go in after him.
"This car comes like 80, 90 mph down the street as kids are getting out of school. It was crazy," witness Mike Lukas said.
"Over the course of a few hours he had several chances to come out and surrender, which he did not," Sgt. Sheridan Shelley of Melbourne Police said.
Officials said Jackson is likely facing additional charges of fleeing and eluding and occupied burglary.
