Orange County activating emergency operations center for Election Day

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. — For Election Day on Tuesday, Orange County is activating its emergency operations center as they do for hurricanes.

Officials said it will be in operation for a few days or as long as they need it, so there is one place for all of the Election Day information to come in. It’s a move they’ve never taken before for an election.

Businesses all over the country have already started to board up businesses in preparation for possible unrest the night of the election. We haven’t seen that in Orlando yet.

Both the Orlando Police Department and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office said they are ready to move staff wherever they’re needed.

So far, Orange County Sheriff John Mina said he doesn’t have any specific threats of violence on Tuesday, but his deputies are ready.

Orlando police chief Orlando Rolon has made it clear that police will not tolerate violence.

“Recognizing that this is an unprecedented time for our nation, the Orlando Police Department will leverage our staffing and resources to meet the needs of our community and ensure the safety of everyone,” he said in a statement. “I want to note that uniformed police will only be seen at a polling location in the event of an emergency or to respond to a call for service.”

At the supervisors of election office, a deputy will be next to Supervisor Bill Cowles not only for his safety and the voters', but to report any problems they may hear about.

Those reports will go right to the EOC, where deputies are ready to respond.
