SANFORD, Fla. — A pregnant woman and two men were shot in the same Sanford neighborhood on Wednesday where another person was shot earlier in the week, police said.
Sanford police said the two shootings happened in the same neighborhood, one on 14th Street, and the other on 13th Place, just one block away.
"It is unfortunate that it is happening now. [It] adds it to what we've got going on here with the other case, the Trayvon Martin case. But we are just going to remain diligent," said police Sgt. David Morgenstern.
Police said Shawnee Riggins, who is from Sarasota but visiting family in Sanford, was in front of their house when a gunman in a silver car fired more than 30 shots from an automatic weapon, hitting Riggins' fiancée, Brittany Goff. Goff is one month pregnant.
Authorities said they are desperate for witnesses because neither the 17-year-old who was shot on Monday morning nor the three people who were shot on Wednesday morning saw their assailants.
"I am surprised no one was killed, no one," Riggins said.
The spray of bullets hit Riggins' friend, his cousin and Goff.
"That is all I heard, rapid fire," Riggins said.
Goff was taken to a hospital, and she is expected to be OK.
"When you found out the bullet grazed her head, what was your reaction?" asked WFTV’s Tim Barber.
"Well, my reaction was I wanted to know: Was the bullet still lodged in her head, and was she alright?" said Riggins. "She went to talk, and she was like, 'Oh, I'm hit!'"
Detectives said a silver Altima, riddled with about a dozen bullet holes, was found a block from the house. Witnesses said the driver of the Altima was nervous when the shots were fired so he sped off and drove around the corner.
Detectives believe the three people who were shot were either in or around the Altima when they were hit. Police said another car in front of the home was hit a number of times, leaving the tires deflated.
Monday's drive-by shooting also happened around 2 a.m., and it was only one block away, on West 13th Place and Mangoustine Avenue.
Police said a silver or gray vehicle was involved in the shooting. A 17-year-old is still recovering from gunshot wounds.
Morgenstern said the Police Department is going to talk to people in the neighborhood before investigators decide if both shootings are tied.
"At this point, we are still investigating. We have our investigators out here canvassing the area, talking to witnesses," said Morgenstern.
Law enforcement officers are being told that if they make contact with the vehicle to use extreme caution. Police said the occupants of the vehicle may be armed with handguns and automatic weapons.
