Man arrested on DUI manslaughter charge in Winter Park crash that killed bicyclist

WINTER PARK, Fla. — A 33-year-old Winter Park man was arrested on DUI manslaughter charges after a bicyclist was struck and killed on a busy road.

The crash happened at about 11 a.m. Saturday on north Semoran Boulevard and Hanging Moss Road.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers said Eric Alicea was heading northbound on Semoran Boulevard in the right lane, while John Perio, 49, of Winter Park was on the raised median near the intersection.

The truck had damage to the front bumper, the hood and windshield.

Perio was waiting to cross to the west side of the road when Alicea drove his pickup truck onto the median and struck Perio, according to FHP.

Troopers and Orange County deputies had the area blocked off for several hours.

Troopers interviewed Alicea inside a patrol car before he was arrested. They also performed a sobriety test.

The northbound lanes of Semoran Boulevard were shut down and traffic was diverted east on Hanging Moss Road as troopers investigated. The road reopened at about 2 p.m.

An FHP report said Alicea provided blood to be tested to confirm if there was alcohol, drugs or both in his system.

The crash remains under investigation.
