WFTV investigation leads to more red-light tickets being thrown out in Winter Park

WINTER PARK, Fla. — In addition to hundreds of other tickets, Channel 9 learned Thursday that Winter Park plans to throw out 200 more red-light traffic tickets.

In all, 760 drivers won't have to pay their ticket, which comes out to nearly $120,000 in fines.

For weeks, Channel 9 analyzed red-light camera images from Winter Park and other surrounding cities and discovered more than half of Winter Park's cameras we shortchanging drivers of yellow-light time.

"As soon as you see yellow you better slam on the brakes because it will switch to red and you will get a ticket," said driver Clem Gray.

Some intersections, like the ones at Lee Rroad and 17/92 and Lakemont and Aloma avenues, were off by as much as half a second based on new yellow-light time standards that went into effect Jan. 1.

Drivers who received a red-light ticket at certain intersections between Jan. 1 and Feb. 5 could have their tickets thrown out.

The city admitted its Public Works Department never lengthened the yellow-light times when the standard changed at the beginning of the year and the city only corrected the lights after Channel 9 pointed out the mistake.

Drivers who have already paid their ticket will get a refund in the mail.
