OSCEOLA COUNTY, Fla. — A man was rushed to the hospital Wednesday after being bitten by his venomous pet snake.
The snake bit the tip of John Post's finger at his Kissimmee home on Wellington Loop.
The African Puff Ader is one of the most venomous snakes in the world.
Post was rushed to Osceola Regional Medical Center in Kissimmee, where he was given antivenin from Reptile World Serpenatrium in St. Cloud.
His wife said he's in stable condition. He's been transferred to Orlando Regional Medical Center, where he'll spend the next couple days.
His neighbors never even knew there were dangerous snakes inside the home across the street.
"It's a quiet neighborhood. We've got dogs and turtles and that kind of stuff, but nothing like snakes. Certainly not a snake that's going to harm somebody," said neighbor Collette Ezzell.
Neighbors said Post has two kids living in the home.
His wife said he has other snakes, but wouldn't specify what kind.
According to a Fish and Wildlife Commission spokesman, the Puff Ader is responsible for more fatalities each year than any other snake in Africa.
The snake was secured in a cage in Post's home. The FWC spokesman said Post had a permit to handle snakes, and the agency didn't find any violations.
Officers said they're still investigating.
