HONOLULU — An anonymous donor paid the bill for all shoppers checking out at a chain of Hawaii grocery stores for one hour Thursday morning.
Nearly 2,000 older customers who took advantage of “Kupuna Shopping Hour” from 6 to 7 a.m. at Foodland, Sack N Save and Foodland Farms stores were surprised to discover their groceries were free, KHON reported.
The gift and plan was kept secret even from store managers - who found out about 30 minutes before stores opened.
Kupuna means grandparent or elder in Hawaiian.
