  • Gather as much information about the incident and other vehicles as possible. If you witnessed the accident happen, write down information about the vehicle and driver including the make and model of the car, the color and the license plate number if you can.
  • If you weren't in the area for the accident, look around for possible witnesses. Ask others in the area if they saw what happened and if they have any information about the car that hit yours. Be sure to ask the witnesses for their name and phone number.
  • Check for security cameras. If the incident happened in a parking lot or garage under video surveillance, the accident could have been recorded.
  • Report the accident to the authorities. Local police will record the accident and help you with follow-up steps. Most insurance companies will require that you have an accident report filled out by the police to report a claim.
  • Write down a description of the scene as well as the time, date and place that it occurred. Take photographs of your vehicle, the damages and the scene in its entirety.
