Deputies: Volusia County boy's claim he fought off clown with selfie stick unfounded

An 11-year-old Volusia County boy told deputies he was nearly attacked by a man dressed as a clown and that he fought him off with a selfie stick.
But after multiple follow ups, deputies now say the incident didn't happen.
The boy told deputies that on Friday the 13th, he was riding on Howland Boulevard near Pine Ridge High School when a clown jumped out from behind a light pole and some bushes.
He told deputies the clown tried to grab him, but the clown never made physical contact.
The victim said he thought the clown was going to hit him so he grabbed his selfie stick and struck the clown multiple times.
The boy told deputies the clown chased him for a short distance before falling and going back into the bushes.
The child went to school and told a school crossing about the incident.
A deputy drove the route and went to where the boy said he saw the clown, but didn’t see anything suspicious.
In a 911 call, the boy’s mother said she believed it may have been a high school student bothering her son.
Deputies said there’s not enough evidence to say a crime occurred.
